SureChem introduces free access option for patent chemistry search

LONDON / SAN DIEGO, CA – 26 MARCH 2012

SureChem, a patent chemistry product line of Digital Science, today introduced SureChemOpen, a new free access option for researchers needing a more effective means of searching the patent literature. The announcement was made in line with the American Chemical Society’s Spring Meeting, held in San Diego, CA.

SureChemOpen provides free access to the complete SureChem database of chemical structures and full text patents. This unique resource integrates patent chemistry into the online scientific research community, enabling linking of patents with other key public and proprietary chemistry data sources.

SureChemOpen is launching in beta mode, open to all users, with additional features planned for release in the coming weeks. In addition to searching by chemical structure and keyword, users will be able to link to SureChem structures that also occur in Royal Society of Chemistry journals and its free ChemSpider chemistry database. The Royal Society of Chemistry is the first of many SureChem content partners working toward a more open, federated chemical information network.

“Patents are a key research resource, and we believe this data should be widely accessible,” says Nicko Goncharoff, Director of SureChem. “Drug discovery is no longer solely the province of big pharma, with academic and non-profit research institutions, small biotechs and contract research organisations getting increasingly involved. SureChem offers a way for researchers throughout industry and academia to easily access patent chemistry at the levels they require.”

SureChemOpen is the first part of a re-launch of the SureChem product line, offering improved data coverage and a wide range of features and functionalities based on extensive customer feedback. SureChemOpen will be followed by SureChemPro – a fully-featured web app designed for regular patent chemistry users – and SureChemDirect, an enterprise solution that enables integration of the complete SureChem database with internal tools and workflows.

For more information on the line of products as well as finding out how to become a SureChem content partner, visit www.surechem.com.

Digital Science supports Open Data project FigShare

LONDON – 8 SEPT 2011

Digital Science, a division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd., welcomes Mark Hahnel to the Research Tools team as Product Development Manager for FigShare, a service that enables researchers to publish and share their data. In this new role, Mark will continue development of FigShare as an independent project, supported by Digital Science.

Mark began work on FigShare while he was a PhD student at Imperial College, frustrated with the duplication and waste in research due to inadequate data openness and visibility. FigShare allows researchers to publish their data in a citable, searchable and sharable manner. The data can come in the form of individual figures, datasets or video files and users are encouraged to share their negative data and unpublished results too. All data is persistently stored online under the most liberal Creative Commons licence, waiving copyright where possible. This allows scientists to access and share the information from anywhere in the world with minimal friction.

“During my PhD I became very aware that a lot of my research data would never see the light of day outside my lab meetings. It made more sense to me to make all of my research data openly available,” said Mark Hahnel, founder of FigShare. “By working with Digital Science, FigShare is receiving a greater level of support to achieve the functionality needed to make it useful to all researchers. The aim is to make the storage and dissemination of research data effortless, in terms of both simplicity and time. Digital Science was the obvious choice to take FigShare forward, as we share the same ethos about the future of research.”

“We’re delighted to welcome Mark to our team,” said Timo Hannay, Managing Director of Digital Science. “As soon as we spoke with him about FigShare, it became apparent that this was a project worthy of our support, but also that a traditional commercial investment wouldn’t have been appropriate. We look forward to working with Mark to learn about how best to enable openness in science, and to build FigShare into a central community resource.”

Digital Science’s relationship with FigShare represents the first of its kind in the company’s history: a community-based, open science project that will retain its autonomy whilst receiving support from the division.

Digital Science launches a new funding program to spur innovation

LONDON – 2 AUG 2011

Digital Science, a division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd., today unveiled its Catalyst Grant, an initiative to support innovators who wish to develop new software tools or technologies for scientific research. The programme will provide a series of awards up to £15,000 each to the most promising ideas for novel uses of information technology in science. Catalyst Grant awards are intended mainly to provide initial support for innovators who wish to take ideas from concept to prototype. Along with funding, they also provide an opportunity to work with Digital Science to refine, develop and promote the innovation.

“We know from talking with researchers and entrepreneurs from around the world that many innovative ideas for making use of technology in science are still locked up inside people’s heads,” said Timo Hannay, Managing Director of Digital Science. “The Catalyst Grant is our way of helping to unleash the best of these and turn them into reality.”

The application process is simple, and decisions are made in a timely fashion. Interested parties are asked to submit a short proposal detailing their breakthrough idea or innovation. Shortlisted applicants are then invited to present their ideas, preferably in person at a Digital Science office in London, New York or Tokyo.

Priority will be given to applicants who have limited access to other sources of funding, and to projects that adopt open and collaborative approaches. Digital Science will not claim intellectual property rights over the results.

“We are proud of Macmillan’s long track record in supporting innovation, both inside and outside the company, not least in our science-publishing division, Nature Publishing Group. But we are always seeking new ways to do more, which is why we launched Digital Science, and why we’re delighted to announce the Catalyst Grant initiative,” said Annette Thomas, CEO, Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

Macmillan Publishers Launches New Technology Division, ‘Digital Science’

LONDON – 7 DEC 2010

Macmillan Publishers Ltd. today announces the launch of Digital Science (http://www.digital-science.com/), a new division of the company and a new kind of scientific information enterprise. Digital Science will focus on providing world-class software tools and services to scientists, managers and funders with the ultimate aim of making research more productive through the use of technology.

The activities of Digital Science build on the reputation for editorial and technological excellence of its sister company, Nature Publishing Group (NPG), but will focus on technology-based solutions for research rather than scientific content.

The Digital Science team brings together a wide range of expertise in science and technology, and is led by Timo Hannay, former publishing director of Nature.com.

“Research is becoming more and more digitally enabled and hence more productive,” says Timo Hannay, Managing Director of Digital Science, “but the gap between the potential opportunity and the current state of the art is still wide. For example, we still have better tools for managing our personal music and photo collections than we have for managing, tracking and mining professional scientific information. At Digital Science we want to help change that.”

The new business combines in-house product design and software development capabilities with external expertise from a range of partners, including academic research groups, start-up businesses and established companies. Currently announced commercial partners include SureChem, BioData and Symplectic.

SureChem, Inc. (http://www.surecheminc.com/) is a scientific text-mining company that specialises in automatically extracting chemical information from large content collections. Its web portal (http://surechem.org/) provides a quick, cost-effective means to search the world’s patents for chemical structures and names. Its technology is also used to annotate chemical terms in the scientific journals hosted on Nature.com. The company was acquired by Macmillan in December 2009 and it is now part of Digital Science.

BioData, Ltd. (http://www.biodata.com/) provides flexible, affordable laboratory management systems for bench scientists and lab administrators. Its main service is an innovative web-based application that enables small and large research groups alike to stay organised without resorting to more expensive, inflexible enterprise software systems. Digital Science acquired an equity stake in BioData in December 2010.

Symplectic (http://www.symplectic.co.uk/) creates tools “written by academics for academics”. The focus of the company’s flagship product “Elements” is to help researchers save time in a culture of increasing administrative demands and, as a side-effect, provides institutions with high quality data on their research. Symplectic Elements automatically tracks the published contributions of the academics associated with an organisation and integrates with other systems such as those for grant management and proposal development. As a result, it simplifies preparation for research assessment, supports in-depth reporting to aid strategic planning through the use of bibliometrics, and significantly improves the use of institutional repositories. Digital Science acquired an equity stake in Symplectic in December 2010.

For more information on these companies and products, and future announcements about Digital Science and its partners, visit (http://www.digital-science.com/products/).

“At NPG we warmly welcome the fast-developing capabilities of Digital Science, our new sister business,” says Steven Inchcoombe, Managing Director of Nature Publishing Group. “We already use SureChem to annotate our research papers and we are keen to incorporate future technological offerings from the Digital Science team into nature.com for the benefit of our 6m+ regular scientific users.”

“Enhancing scientific research, education and communication is a longstanding commitment of the Macmillan group — going back to the launch of Nature in 1869,” says Annette Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Macmillan Publishers Ltd. “Macmillan has always been an information company, and we now live in the information age. The establishment of Digital Science reflects our ongoing commitment to serve the needs of professional researchers around the world and our belief that technology will transform the research process.”

About Nature Publishing Group
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a publisher of high-impact scientific and medical information in print and online. NPG publishes journals, online databases and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences and clinical medicine. Its flagship product is Nature, founded in 1869, a leading weekly, international scientific journal. NPG also publishes a range of Nature research journals and Nature Reviews journals in addition to Nature itself.
