the state of open data figshare reportDuring Open Access week in October, Figshare released the results of its global survey of 2,000 researchers in a report that assesses the global landscape around open data and sharing practices. Now viewed by over 14,000 people, “The State of Open Data” – report and survey finds 80% of researchers value data citation as much as, or more than article citation.

This webinar will look at the motivations behind this report and will delve into some of the unique data as well as taking a look at the global state of open data. We’ll hear from report participants, as well as: Delta Think, an industry consultancy that have just launched an Open Access Investigation, a subscription database and report resource for all Open Access market stakeholders, and the Open Research group at the Wellcome Trust.

dan vDan is an expert in everything STM publishing and brings a wealth of experience to Figshare. Dan’s love of technology, innovation and fixing the broken meant a career in science was his destiny.

Laura Wheeler is the Community Manager for Digital Science. Having joined the team in 2013, Laura is tasked with growing the presence of Digital Science and is always busy helping to build online communities. Having studied Biochemistry Laura left the lab life for science communication roles at the BBC and at Nature Publishing Group.

Jon Treadway

Jon Treadway is Director of Operational Strategy at Digital Science. Prior to this he spent five years across the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group companies in a variety of roles and previously worked for the Arts Council and KPMG. Jon is unashamedly Transpontine, a folkie at heart and re-reads Hogfather at least once a year.

SabinaDr Sabina Leonelli is an Associate Professor in the College of Social Science and International Studies at Exeter University. Sabina is the Co-Director of the Exeter Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences (Egenis), where she leads the Data Studies research strand. Her research spans the fields of history and philosophy of biology, science and technology studies and general philosophy of science. Her current focus is on the philosophy, history and sociology of data-intensive science, especially the research processes, scientific outputs and social embedding of Open Science, Open Data and Big Data.

heather-photoHeather Joseph is the Executive Director of SPARC, (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), a coalition of academic and research libraries expanding the open communication of scholarship. SPARC supports new models for sharing digital articles, data and educational resources, and is widely recognized as the leading force for Open Access advocacy. Heather is an active participant on committees and projects at several U.S. federal agencies. In 2015, she was appointed to the newly formed Commerce Data Advisory Council and tasked with providing input to the Secretary of Commerce on issues surrounding open data.

Wellcome Trust Staff Portraits

Aki MacFarlane – Research Analyst in the Open Research team at the Wellcome Trust. Aki has been at Wellcome since 2015 and currently works on scoping potential activities and partnerships in the open research space. Previously she worked as a Science Portfolio Adviser in the Population, Environment and Health funding team at Wellcome, and as a Database Editorial Assistant at Biomed Central. Her background is in Biology and Epidemiology.

deni-aDeni Auclair serves both as the Delta Think CFO and as a Senior Analyst supporting client needs in market research, digital strategy development, and technology strategy initiatives.  She is also a team member in the newly-launched Delta Think Investigations series, the first such Investigation focusing on Open Access. Deni’s career includes over 25 years of in-depth strategic planning and financial management at various publishers, including roles at both John Wiley & Sons and JBJS. Her experience in corporate strategy and development spans mergers and acquisitions, partnerships and alliances, financial and strategic planning, and includes extensive experience in not-for-profit management and finance.

 Deni has also held senior publishing and analyst roles at several organizations including G.P Putnam’s Sons, Sports Illustrated, and Outsell, Inc.  In her most recent role as VP & Lead Analyst at Outsell, she was responsible for guiding clients through the changes impacting science, technology, and medicine (STM) and healthcare overall. She supported decision making relating to product investment, innovation, strategic partnerships, and more.
