Submissions invited for proposals to receive funding for projects to advance understanding of alternative research metrics

Our portfolio company Altmetric today announced that applications for its annual research grant are now open. Launched back in 2016, the grant provides up to £1,500 ($1,900 USD) to fund research that facilitates the development and understanding of alternative research metrics (altmetrics) as part of the wider scholarly agenda.

The grant aims to support projects that would not otherwise receive the necessary funding, and is open globally to academics, researchers and librarians interested in doing research in the altmetrics space.

Altmetric’s Founder Euan Adie says,

“We’re really pleased to be offering this grant again. Last year’s project resulted in some fantastic work that focussed on the impacts of research in public policy, and we’re looking forward to seeing what innovative ideas this year’s submissions bring.”

Lauren Cadwallader, Open Access Research Advisor at the University of Cambridge and winner of the 2016 grant, adds

“Without this grant I would never have had the opportunity to conduct this research. It’s great that Altmetric are providing funding for projects like this, and I really appreciated how responsive they were to any questions I had along the way.”

Lauren’s research project resulted in many interesting insights into how quickly research is incorporated into public policy, and the other types and amount of attention that those papers receive. A write up of her work is available on the Altmetric blog.

All applications for the 2017 grant will be reviewed by a panel of research experts that includes our Simon Porter, VP of Academic Relationships & Knowledge Architecture at Digital Science; Mike Taylor, Head of Metrics Development at Digital Science; Euan Adie, Founder of Altmetric; and Stacy Konkiel, Director of Research & Education at Altmetric. Grantees will be announced on the 16th May 2017.

Applications can be submitted between now and 11pm BST on 21st April 2017. A detailed submission guide and template is available on the Altmetric website.
