London Book Fair

The London Book Fair (LBF) is an annual event that acts as a meeting point for publishers and distributors from a wide range of industries including print, audio, TV, film and digital. LBF sees more than 25,000 publishing professionals arrive in London for the event and this year, Digital Science’s Director of Publishing Innovation Phill Jones, Overleaf’s Cofounder John Hammersley and Altmetric’s COO Kathy Christian, will be attending. The Fair will take place in March at Olympia, West London.

Phill Jones Panelist (Digital Science): Connecting readers to content and keeping their Interest

Where: The Faculty

Phill Jones will join Ingenta and a panel of experts to discuss the problems and challenges publishers face when trying to connect with readers. Technological tools that aid publishers in connecting with readers will be the main focus of the session.

Kathy Christian Chair (Altmetric): Shaping the Story: How New Technologies are Bringing About the Next Chapter in Academic Book Publishing

Is the academic book loosing out to the journal article? How can we measure the impact of academic books? New technologies and evolved metrics bring about huge opportunities for publishers, researchers, funders and academic institutions. The panel will explore what new opportunities are available to publishers today and how publishers can integrate these new tools into their book publishing activities.

Phill Jones Chair(Digital Science): Careers in Academic Publishing: Developing and Enhancing Skills and Experience

Wednesday 15th March, 10:00 – 11:00

The panel hope to explore the issues recent graduates face when entering the industry and how best to attract talent. Panelists will reflect on their own experience to better answers the above questions.

Technology has allowed independent publishers to enter the market, sharing and dispersing their work across multiple formats and geographic territories. Academic publishing, however, remains unchanged with a small selection of large companies dominating the market. The panel will debate the ways in which scholarly publishing can benefit from the independent market and also the challenges and benefits this poses for academics.

Overleaf: Facilitating global research and collaboration presented by Dr John Hammersley, CEO and Co-founder of Overleaf

John has always been fascinated by science, space, exploration and technology. After completing a PhD in Mathematical Physics at Durham University in 2008, he went on to help launch the world’s first driverless taxi system now operating at London’s Heathrow Airport.
