The field of metrics research has no shortage of conferences–there are many events where we can share insights and compare approaches–but more often than not our events are niche and siloed. Scientometricians talk with other scientometricians; librarians with librarians; funders with other funders; and so on.

For the last two years, I’ve been talking with a number of colleagues about how we can encourage conversations and collaborations between funders, academics, publishers and research evaluation professionals.

The result is “Transforming Research” (aka “Transforming the research portfolio for greater impact: methodologies, metrics, and meaning”), which is being kindly hosted by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA), October 12-13, 2017.

We’ve got speakers from a range of organizations and disciplines scheduled to present, including Steve Fuller (professor of philosophy, University of Warwick), Kari Wojtanik (Senior Manager of Evaluations & Outcomes, Susan G. Komen Foundation), and Dick Clevans (Map of Science). The organizing committee has worked hard to create a program that includes speakers from large and small funders, research institutions and elsewhere, and we’ve got a great line-up of thought leaders from the fields of biomedicine, philosophy, humanities and sociology.

Transforming Research has been deliberately designed to promote conversations and exchanges of ideas. This promises to be a unique conference for people who use metrics to shape research programmes and portfolios to mix with academics, funders, publishers and commercial organizations. We hope you’ll join us!
