Who’s Wagging the Dog? The Role of Funder Mandates in Defining the Needs of End Users

On the 13th October our Chief Scientist, Jonathan Adams will be moderating the third webinar in the series: Who’s Wagging the Dog? The Role of Funder Mandates in Defining the Needs of End Users.You can join Jonathan on Tuesday, October 13 at 11:00 AM – Noon ET.
“Are peer-reviewed articles the only way in which publishers can help researchers communicate? Scholarly communication is expanding to include data sets, computer code, and multimedia output. Technologically, new output types have been possible for some time, so what is driving this sudden rapid uptake? The answer is that changes in funder attitudes towards what constitutes legitimate scholarly output are creating new needs among researchers, and by extension, new opportunities for publishers.”
He’ll be joined by the following all-star panel:
- Jerry Sheehan, Whitehouse Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)
- Simon Kerridge, Director of Research Services, Kent University and Chair of the Association of Research Managers and Administrators
- Kirsty Meddings, Product Manager, Crossref
Jerry Sheehan represents the Whitehouse OSTP and can speak about some of the programs, challenges and successes that the US government has had in this area, as well a little of what they’re planning for the future.
Simon Kerridge brings a UK perspective. Some of the most progressive mandates and assessment frameworks are coming out of the UK from the Welcome Trust open access mandate to HEPFCE’s research evaluation framework. Simon will tell us about some of the problems that this creates for researchers and by extension what might be done to help them.
Finally, Kirsty Meddings from Crossref will help put this all into perspective and explain what basic steps publishers can take and the workflows they need to put into place now to ensure that they meet current and future mandate requirements.
