Fighshare for Institutions launched at Monash University in Australia last week, and the Figshare team were there in full support. Their latest research data management service now allows researchers to store, share and make their data available, while retaining control of access rights, re-use conditions and ownership.

Mark Hahnel, CEO and founder of Figshare explains:

“At Figshare, we believe in partnering with the community in order to build tools that matter to them, which fit into existing workflows whilst also helping to further the research data agenda. There’s no greater example of this than our partnership with Monash University in Australia and it was our great pleasure to attend the launch of their Figshare service last week.”

Over the past two years Figshare have been working with David Groenewegen, Director of Research and his team in the library, along with the eSolutions department to develop Figshare for Institutions. This involved completely rebuilding Figshare from the ground up in order to cater to the diverse needs of institutions around the world.

Figshare is now able to store data in places other than their default Amazon Web Services S3 storage. For Monash University they plugged into Vicnode storage, part of the Australian national network of Research Data Services (RDS), so Monash researchers can rest assured they are compliant with Australia’s data sovereignty regulations.

Professor Ian Smith, Vice-Provost (Research and Research Infrastructure), Monash University says of the launch:

“We understand that researchers want to be able to manage their data in ways that they control, that comply with their needs and obligations, and that make sense and fit well with their workflows and disciplinary expectations. We are committed to providing the tools and services that enable this, and which will persist beyond the life of a project or paper. Figshare is a key plank in this ecosystem of services.”
