The Charleston Conference is an informal annual gathering of librarians, publishers, electronic resource managers, consultants, and vendors of library materials in Charleston, SC, in November, to discuss issues of importance to them all. It is designed to be a collegial gathering of individuals from different areas who discuss the same issues in a non-threatening, friendly, and highly informal environment. Presidents of companies discuss and debate with library directors, acquisitions librarians, reference librarians, serials librarians, collection development librarians, and many others. Begun in 1980, the Charleston Conference has grown from 20 participants in 1980 to thousands in 2018.

Digital Science is looking forward to attending this year’s conference as an exhibitor in the Vendor Showcase. Meet Altmetric, Dimensions, Figshare, and Symplectic teams at Table #4 and discover more about how our portfolio products can enhance your research information management.

We are also delighted to be presenting a number of talks as part of the conference program.

Neapolitan talk: The Psychology of Metrics – Daniel Hook

Abstract: Metrics and indicators have infiltrated every part of academia from our decisions on what to read and where to publish, to who we hire and what we fund.  They are ubiquitous.  This talk explores why we have become so addicted to metrics: the mechanics behind how they are constructed and what makes an appealing metric.  We look at why they are bad for us, why AI could make it worse, and how we can break the cycle of dependency.
