We have a vision of a future where a trusted, frictionless, collaborative research ecosystem drives progress for all. Many in our team started their careers in research so we know the daily challenges the research community faces. But we go beyond this – we also work with institutions, funders, and publishers to ensure they can better serve their own communities with technology that delights.

We’re looking for a Commercial Director to join us as part of the management team for two of Digital Science’s key products – Altmetric and Dimensions. Reporting into the joint leadership team with the CEOs for both products, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring our future success. Leading on commercial strategy, sales, and marketing for both products across our customer segments; Academic, Publisher, Corporate & Pharma, and Government & Funder – you’ll partner closely with the Heads of Sales for each of the segments. Interfacing with our Commercial leaders, you will play a critical role in expanding our companies’ commercial activities and are ultimately responsible for the company’s revenue targets and business goals that will lead to sustainable growth.

You’ll need to be excited about the potential of these products and be able to shape a realistic but ambitious vision for the years ahead. You’ll be a quick thinker who is able to adapt easily, experienced in people management and an expert in juggling many projects at once. With a strategic eye, excellent organizational skills, a passion for data, and experience working in a fast-paced environment, you will have demonstrable experience of excelling in a high-growth, high change organisation.

This role requires you to be a technically excellent sales leader with a deep understanding of the tools, processes, and experience of running a global sales operation.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop and deliver commercial strategy, program and plans in conjunction with internal stakeholders including Digital Science (DS) Global Sales and Marketing teams, Dimensions and Altmetric Product Marketing and Product Development teams
  • In collaboration with our Global Sales leaders, be accountable for achieving new sales and renewal targets in our industry segments: Corporate, Publisher, Academic, and Government & Funder.
  • Oversee the implementation and execution of the sales strategy for both renewal and new business globally.
  • Monitor performance of commercial activities using key metrics; set clear targets, evaluate progress and prepare reports for senior management.
  • Line manage, including coaching and developing senior team members, including segment Heads and Marketing Directors for both products
  • Align strategic marketing initiatives and activities with commercial plans and targets, and oversee the implementation of these activities
  • Ensure that Altmetric and Dimensions maintain and grow their strong position in the wider market, through both sales and brand awareness
  • Create sales plans for each segment, set goals, make regular forecasts and launch new products
  • Conduct market research and analysis to create detailed business plans on commercial opportunities to grow the business in line with the needs of clients
  • Monitor, analyze, and identify growth opportunities with the existing customer base and new clients
  • Act as the key point of contact for our Digital Science sales reps, making pricing and contractual decisions on a daily basis in partnership with our legal team and CEOs
  • Establish strong partnerships with key Product, Support and Technology leads in both teams.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Significant sales management and strategic marketing experience
  • Excellent leadership, communication and people development skills, being able to act as a coach and mentor
  • Strong business knowledge and experience interpreting trend data
  • A proven track record in commercial or sales leadership roles in a high-growth technology company

  • Experience in managing and developing budgets, setting pricing, and developing new pricing models
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in Academic and/or Corporate and/or Government and/or Publishing segments

  • Extensive experience as a Commercial Director or other relevant role in a similar high-growth environment
  • A solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial/budgeting processes
  • You can learn quickly and have the ability to adapt easily to new scenarios with a high level of practical problem-solving ability
  • You have excellent organizational and leadership skills, and are able to navigate relationships to get things done, in a complex matrix organisation
  • You’re an excellent communicator who can be equally comfortable speaking across multidimensional stakeholders internal and external and do this with a high level of gravitas
  • You’re a strategic thinker, influencer, and motivator and are able to articulate your vision to take people on a journey with you
  • You thrive in a high-pace, high change environment and can navigate ambiguity to drive the change needed to deliver the commercial strategy
  • You can strategize and negotiate the best way forward and execute this in a clear and diplomatic way

What we can offer you:

  • A chance to help change the world of research discovery, analysis, and assessment
  • The opportunity to have a direct impact on the future of two of the industry’s leading technologies
  • Competitive salary and benefits
  • Fantastic, smart colleagues who care passionately about what we are trying to achieve
