Deep Learning applied to scientific manuscripts in order to help university authors improve their use of written English

St Petersburg Polytechnic University, one of the top research facilities in Russia, has announced a partnership with Digital Science portfolio company, Writefull.

The university, which is part of the Russian Universities International Excellence Initiative (5-100 Project), will adopt Writefull (an AI-based language platform which authors can use on their scientific texts) to improve the grammar, spelling and specific scientific language in their research.

St Petersburg Polytechnic University is the first Russian institution to adopt the tool (full institutional license) and hopes to increase publication activities as part of the Project 5-100 initiative.

Writefull co-founder, Juan Castro, PhD, said: “We are very excited to have St Petersburg Polytechnic University as one of our partners. Being a top university in teaching and research, SPbPU wants to make sure that the writing of their students and staff is efficient and of high quality – which is exactly what Writefull does.”

Maria Vrublevskaya, Head of Strategic Planning Office at Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University shared: “We’ve been anticipating the launch of a new digital and smart tool at our university to support our young  colleagues and those ones who still require streamlining of the academic writing in English. Willing to boost the awareness of Polytech research outcomes and strengthen academic reputation we see the collaboration with progressive partners proposing digital solutions for research dissemination as our strategic focus.

Igor Osipov, PhD, Vice-President A&G at Digital Science added: “We are honored and happy to see a leading research focused and internationally oriented University in Russia taking the lead in institutional adoption of Writefull in Eastern Europe. I am very much looking forward to see the practical outcome of this project for the university community.”

Writefull applies machine learning, trained on millions of published scientific papers and suggests improvements to grammar, spelling and academic language usage. These suggestions are based on real-world, context-specific usage rather than on a fixed set of grammatical rules.
