Today is a busy day for us at Digital Science!

IMG_1867Firstly, we’re sponsoring this year’s Open Data Institute Summit in London, featuring talks by Tim Berners-Lee  and others. Team members from our newly launched GRID, an openly accessible dataset of information on worldwide research organisations, are also there to answer questions.

You can check out the online conversations using #ODIsummit which is currently trending on Twitter.

Secondly, our Managing Director Daniel Hook is heading to the launch of Imperial’s Data Science Institute Vision and the KPMG Data Observatory:

The Data Science Institute provides a focal point for world-class, data-driven research at Imperial, helping to tackle grand challenges by encouraging the sharing of data and developing new technologies for analysis and management. The Institute works in collaboration with global partners, such as KPMG (Data Observatory), Huawei Technologies Ltd (Data Science Innovation Lab) and Zhejiang University (Joint Lab for Applied Data Science Lab) to accelerate the translation of data science innovation into improvements for society. The Institute facilitates access to funding for cross-disciplinary, data-intensive research, and promotes the training and education of the new generation of data scientists.

The KPMG Data Observatory lies at the heart of the Data Science Institute. It is a state-of-the-art data visualisation and decision-making studio comprising a 132 mega-pixel immersive display environment with 64 monitors and 37 high performance computers with significant data-processing capacity. The Observatory is the largest facility of its kind in Europe and one of the highest resolution decision-making suites in the world. It will enable academic and industrial teams to visualise, analyse and gain insight from datasets. The studio brings together academics and businesses from diverse backgrounds, and helps them jointly interrogate data to enhance decision making.
