For many years, Digital Science has welcomed some of the most exciting and innovative movers, shakers, and doers from our research community into our London office to share their insights with our colleagues, often over drinks and nibbles.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Digital Science family and the world into lockdowns, we hosted guest speakers online, always ensuring that we facilitated the opportunity for our teams to engage with changemakers from across our profession, and for our speakers to hear from our amazing colleagues and learn about the work they are doing to support research.

After a short break, we are excited to bring back live, in-person Digital Science Speaker Series talks, and this time we’re sharing the opportunity with the broader research community and the sci-curious public. We’re partnering with the Royal Institution (the Ri) to sponsor two of their public lectures in 2023.

The Ri has a long and impressive history of research and science communication and holds values that align closely with our own, so we are thrilled to be sponsoring two of their lectures in 2023 as part of our Speaker Series Live. We’re kicking off with Dr Chris Van Tulleken’s talk on Ultra-Processed People on Tuesday 19th September, followed by Dame Athene Donald’s talk entitled Not Just For The Boys on Thursday 16th November.

We caught up with Chris ahead of his talk to discuss his new book, the impact of investigative research, inclusion, and how greater transparency of research stakeholders can help reduce bias and build integrity and trust.

We know that not everyone is based in London, and not everyone can make an evening event, so part of our sponsorship goes towards our commitment to breaking down geographical and temporal barriers to accessing interesting events by supporting the recording of the talks. These will be added to the Ri’s YouTube channel in due course.

Chris’s talk is now available on the Ri’s YouTube channel here.

We know that there are loads more people to meet, celebrate and showcase within our community, so in between our live talks, we’ll interview people doing exciting things and host those conversations on our own YouTube channel and right here on TL;DR. We’d love to hear your recommendations and wish lists for people you’d like to hear from.

In the meantime, check out our Speaker Series playlist on YouTube which contains some of our previous speakers, watch our chat with Chris, and let us know who we should be inviting for a chat!
