Challenge

Why Moderna needed a faster way to update its SCP

Pandemic-era data moved too fast for a scientific communications platform set once a year, so Moderna’s Medical Affairs team needed a near real-time library.

Medical Affairs bridges Research and Commercial, tailoring communications for healthcare professionals. Before the pandemic, teams followed a scientific communications platform (SCP) set at the start of the year. During COVID-19, releases on efficacy, durability and real world evidence (RWE) meant that approach had to be reimagined.

The team needed to update the SCP quickly while keeping trust in the information, which matters in highly regulated Medical Affairs where every citation must be correct.

Solution

How Moderna rolled out ReadCube across Medical Affairs libraries

Moderna’s Medical Affairs team worked with ReadCube’s technical team to upload and organize content into libraries that now form its scientific communications platform.

Before choosing, the team set requirements: tagging and search filters for workflows, libraries for COVID-19, RSV and flu that could scale with the pipeline, and custom fields for data points from literature reviews. Moderna’s Clinical team, a ReadCube user for a few years, recommended it.

  1. Upload and organize content
ReadCube’s technical team helped Moderna upload content into libraries, creating an agile scientific communications platform.
  2. Tag and structure the libraries
Tags, lists and smart lists let curators manage the global SCP library, and country-level teams can build their own libraries.
  3. Load content from PubMed and reviews
A browser extension adds papers from PubMed and other databases, and literature review metadata imports as a CSV file.
  4. Add custom fields for key data points
Libraries such as COVID-19 hold standard metadata plus fields like population, variants and country, so teams can narrow results.
  5. Enable field teams and train users
Medical Science Liaisons open figures, graphs and papers with citations in one click or tap, and recorded training sessions support onboarding.

Who was involved: Moderna’s Scientific Communications, Digital and Medical Affairs teams, the RSV library curator and ReadCube’s team.

Results

What Moderna achieved in Medical Affairs

Moderna Medical Affairs is still evaluating ReadCube’s impact on team performance, but employee feedback has been extremely positive.

  • One click or tap gives Medical Science Liaisons figures, graphs and cited papers during HCP conversations.
  • Limited training was needed to create libraries and integrate the platform, which the team found intuitive and fast.
  • Sule and Sable, who used EndNote before, found ReadCube more robust and user-friendly.
  • Country-level Medical Teams can build their own libraries alongside the global SCP library.

What it means: ReadCube gives Moderna Medical Affairs a searchable, cited library that can be updated as new data arrives, rather than an SCP fixed at the start of the year. Teams can find, share and present evidence quickly, and field teams can bring it into HCP conversations.

Measurement note: Based on feedback from Moderna Medical Affairs team members; the team is still evaluating impact.

FAQs

Inside Moderna’s ReadCube workflow

How does ReadCube fit into Moderna’s literature review workflow?

Review metadata imports into the matching ReadCube library as a CSV file. This works whether reviews came from third-party vendors or, as now, from custom GPTs for reviews and summaries.

How do Moderna teams find content in ReadCube?

They search libraries organized with tags or custom fields, for example by therapeutic area, pregnancy or lactation, and can filter out unwanted results with the custom search tool.

What training and support did ReadCube provide?

ReadCube hosted multiple training sessions early on and recorded them, so new and existing employees can revisit them. The client engagement team has also been proactive and responsive when questions come up, according to Moderna.
