The Australasian Research Management Society conference takes place virtually this year with the theme “SHAPING THE NEXT NORMAL: NEW HORIZONS IN RESEARCH MANAGEMENT”.

Research management is still a relatively new and evolving field; this evolution has been accelerated due to the global impact of COVID-19 on how we live, work and conduct research. This year’s ARMS conference theme embraces this change and fosters discussions about what the future will look like and the changes in practice that are happening or need to happen to effectively support the research endeavour now and in the future.

Symplectic are proud to be Silver Sponsors of this year’s event!

On September 9, Symplectic’s VP of Product Kate Byrne will be speaking alongside Sheila Law of the Victoria University of Wellington in the below session.

Equipped for Growth: Maximising the Use of Research Infrastructure on Campus

Friday 9 September 2022, 1:05PM

Higher education institutes and research organisations are often home to many pieces of high cost and highly-specified equipment. However, infrastructure is often sadly under-utilised as researchers, especially those external to the organisation, may have little awareness of what they have access to, how to find it, what it can be used for, and who can guide them in how to use it. As a result, ongoing investment in infrastructure can suffer, to the detriment of the research institution, the researcher, and the research itself.

We explore how institutions can leverage digital infrastructure to surface physical infrastructure as profiles in a public portal: advertising a piece of equipment’s presence on campus and maximising its value and use. By linking equipment profiles to research outputs and activities, institutions can demonstrate and report on the wider impact of that piece of equipment, supporting ongoing investment in institutional infrastructure. These public profiles can be used to solidify reputation, attract academic talent, and drive research innovation through transparency and collaboration. They can even open up valuable revenue streams through new commercial partnerships with industry.

We will hear from Victoria University of Wellington on the implementation and uptake of its expert portal in the first six months after adding Equipment profiles, and take a look at how the Ohio Innovation Exchange is connecting institutional equipment with industry to drive regional economic development.

While this year’s event will be delivered in a virtual platform, an in-person Welcome Reception will be scheduled in the evening (for approx. 2 hours) the day prior to the virtual conference, on Tuesday 6 September 2022. Multiple Welcome Receptions are expected to be held across most Chapters of ARMS. A member of the Symplectic team will be on-site at the Melbourne Welcome Reception – get in touch if you’d like to set up time for a chat!
