#FuturePub London – New Developments in Scientific Collaboration Tech

Location

London

Country

United Kingdom

Date

4th May, 2023

It’s been a while! #FuturePub London is back 🙂 And this time it’s at The Royal Institution!

The evenings are designed to be fun and informal – we aim to give opportunities to those working on new ideas and innovations a chance to present and get feedback on their ideas. And did we mention the free food and drink?

We’ve hosted over a dozen #FuturePub events, since our first back in January 2014, and quickly became known as “a staple of the London science tech/publishing scene”  (thanks Eva!).

In case this is your first time, here’s how it works:

1. Five or six quick-fire talks cover a range of new and exciting developments in science & publishing tech.
2. These all fit into a one-hour slot (from around 6:30-7:45 pm), to keep the evening fast-paced and fun! Arrive early for pre-talk food and drinks or to look around the amazing Ri! 🙂
3. The rest of the evening is then open for discussions and conversations over the remainder of the drinks and/or food! We get a great mixture of attendees from the research, publishing and start-up communities.

Then at around 9 pm we’ll all head to The King’s Head where we continue the conversation!

Speakers & Talks

We’re delighted to announce a fantastic & provocative starting line-up of speakers for the evening:

The future of publishing is video

Andrew Preston, Co-founder of Cassyni

Every year, millions of academic seminars and thousands of research conferences take place. This large scale dissemination of knowledge has been happening for centuries, is complementary to the published literature, and much of it is now recorded.

However, sifting through millions of hours of recorded research isn’t very practical. How can we make these videos searchable, citable, and a core part of the future of academic publishing? In this talk I explore cutting-edge ideas and concepts.

Speaker bio: Andrew is one of the co-founders of Cassyni, the tool that helps researchers to discover, run, publish, and cite academic seminars. Previously, he was an active researcher in physics, first as a PhD student at Victoria University of Wellington, then as postdoctoral fellow at Boston University. Andrew went on to found Publons, which was acquired by Clarivate in 2017 and now serves more than 2 million researchers. At Clarivate, Andrew was also product director for Web of Science.

TooWrite; the scientific method for scientific writing

Ivy Cavendish, Founder of TooWrite

TooWrite is a digital platform that seeks to transform the process of scientific writing into an experience that is faster, healthier, and more accessible to researchers at all career stages. This lightning talk follows our founder journey and the creation of TooWrite – starting with two academics with a problem to solve, all the way to being acquired and hired by world-leading publisher, Springer Nature, and looking ahead at what’s coming next!

Speaker bio: Ivy Cavendish is the founder of TooWrite and current Head of Writing Solutions at Springer Nature. And as she wrote in this article for Research Information:

“I was writing a PhD at the University of Sussex on the intersection of anti-theistic absurdist philosophy and the unheimlich – the uncanny – when I was rudely interrupted by discovering the thing that I wanted to do with my life: solve the centuries-old problem of scientific writing.”

“At the same time my friend, Algernon, was writing his thesis in computational biology. We were co-working one day – and, like many scientists have found, he was getting incredibly frustrated with the process of writing up…”

…and to find out how that story continues, join us at the Royal Institution on May the 4th — register for your free ticket today!

Doors open at 6pm and the talks will kick off at around 6:30pm. And if you’re interested at speaking at a future #FuturePub (!) please let us know by filling out this short proposal form.

Look out for the second pair of speakers to be announced on April 11th, and we look forward to seeing you in London on #StarWarsDay! 🙂
