Digital Science are going to be running a workshop at the 2014 Naturejobs Career Expo this Friday. The session titled, “Life beyond the bench: I love science but I don’t want to stay in research!”, is aimed at researchers who want to pursue their passion for science but are unsure about staying in the lab.

As Digital Science’s Timo Hannay recently pointed out, only 3.5% of UK science PhDs stay in university research, so the topic of alternative careers for scientists is a huge one. At our #BeyondTheBench workshop we will give an overview of some of the various career options available to scientists. We will then have a panel discussion in which a range of former scientists from within Digital Science will share their stories about life beyond the bench.

The panel will be moderated by Digital Science’s Community Manager, Laura Wheeler and will be made up of: Euan Adie, founder of Altmetric who is a former bioinformatician, Sabih Ali, Head of Brand at Symplectic who is a former electronic engineer, Jean Liu, Product Development Manager at Altmetric who is a former neuroscientist and John Hammersley, one of the co-founders of WriteLaTeX who is a former theoretical physicist.  Examples of possible topics for the discussion to focus on include science blogging, using social media, business skills, entrepreneurship, networking and internships.

The Naturejobs Career Expo is taking place on Friday 19th September at the Business Design Centre in London. Our workshop will be taking place in Room C from 2:50pm to 3:50pm and you will also be able to find us throughout the day at the Macmillan Science & Education booth.
