With an opening fanfare for past and present successes of British science & engineering, more than 400 (not very racially diverse, it was noted) people from the great and the good of the science and engineering community squeezed into the  lecture theatre at the Royal Institution last night .  The occasion was the 30th anniversary of the annual Campaign for Science & Engineering (CaSE) lecture.  Our MD Daniel Hook and Martin Szomszor our Head of Data Science were amongst many familiar faces in the audience, from our friends and partners in academia, industry and the media.

In it Jo Johnson MP outlined his plans to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of innovation.

“We have the tools, people, ambition –  together will make Britain best place in world for science, engineering and innovation for decades to come.”

At the heart of his pitch was the news of a series of new investments, to ensure that Britain remains a scientific powerhouse in the years to come.  Of note was  a promise to invest £30m to improve UK science centres and inspire young people into STEM careers. Despite several attempts by the audience, he resisted any temptation to be drawn into a discussion on the impact of a potential Brexit.
