Digital Science portfolio company Altmetric has today announced support for Altmetric badges is now built into faculty profile pages powered by Profiles Research Networking Software (Profiles RNS). Profiles RNS is an NIH-funded open source tool to speed the process of finding researchers with specific areas of expertise for collaboration and professional networking, making it easy for institutions to create and maintain a complete searchable library of web-based electronic CVs.

Altmetric badges provide an at-a-glance summary of the amount and type of attention an individual research output has received online. The addition of the Altmetric badges means that users will be able to easily access real-time attention insights for individual research outputs listed on a researcher’s profile page.

First to embed Altmetric badges into their faculty pages is the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Anirvan Chatterjee, Director of Data Strategy at UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute says of the news:

“UCSF Profiles has included Altmetric badges for over a year and we’ve received great feedback.  Altmetric badges are an important tool to help us highlight some of our researchers’ interesting new work. We look forward to seeing this integration deployed widely across Profiles RNS sites.”

Attention data is collated from a range of online sources including public policy documents, mainstream media, Wikipedia, social networks, blogs, and academic forums such as Mendeley and post-publication peer-review platforms to provide a wider picture of the online reach and influence of the research.alt screen shot

Altmetric Founder Euan Adie adds of the news:

“We are really pleased to see this integration of our badges into Profiles RNS. Understanding the bigger conversation surrounding an individual research publication is an important part of interpreting the literature, and making that data easily accessible and transparent to academics is at the core of the services Altmetric provides.”
